an isolation education

I’ve been out of work for a few weeks, and have been taking online courses to keep myself busy and mentally stimulated. I wanted to share some of those courses with you in case you were in a similar situation to me.

Coursera

Feminism and Social Justice | Taught by Professor Bettina Aptheker of the University of California, Santa Cruz. Free course with optional Certification for $49. In the course, Professor Aptheker presents a broad definition of feminism that serves to frame three significant events in the history of feminism and social justice: the Empire Zinc strike of 1951, the 1971-1972 trial of Angela Davis, and the #metoo Movement.

Introduction to Food and Health | Taught by Dr. Maya Adam, MD of Stanford University. Free course with optional Certification for $39. Course Trailer. We urgently need to explore innovative strategies for promoting healthful eating. There is strong evidence that global increases in the consumption of heavily processed foods, coupled with cultural shifts away from the preparation of food in the home, have contributed to high rates of preventable, chronic disease. In this course, learners will be given the information and practical skills they need to begin optimizing the way they eat. This course will shift the focus away from reductionist discussions about nutrients and move, instead, towards practical discussions about real food and the environment in which we consume it. By the end of this course, learners should have the tools they need to distinguish between foods that will support their health and those that threaten it. In addition, we will present a compelling rationale for a return to simple home cooking, an integral part of our efforts to live longer, healthier lives.

Introduction to Personal Branding | Taught by Kimberley Barker, MLIS, of the University of Virginia. Free course with optional Certification for $49. Though the concept of personal branding isn’t new, questions remain about how to create one and, more importantly, what it means to maintain and inhabit that brand. Barker provides a warm, supportive atmosphere in which learners are encouraged to intensively explore themselves in order to create a personal brand that authentically and effectively communicates their values and professional gifts. Together we will build a strong community in which to provide encouragement and feedback, and support each other as learners pursue their goal of successful brand creation.

The Science of Being-Well | Taught by Professor Laurie Santos of Yale University. Free course with optional Certification for $49. In this course you will engage in a series of challenges designed to increase your own happiness and build more productive habits. As preparation for these tasks, Professor Laurie Santos reveals misconceptions about happiness, annoying features of the mind that lead us to think the way we do, and the research that can help us change. You will ultimately be prepared to successfully incorporate a specific wellness activity into your life. The Science of Well Being was produced in part due to the generous funding of the of the David F. Swensen Fund for Innovation in Teaching.
